U.S. Military Deploys FIS' Cover Cop Security System

Oriskany, NY (PRWEB) February 19, 2008 -- Fiber Instrument Sales, Inc. (FIS) has developed a unique underground security system, which is being deployed by the U.S. Military. The company's patented Cover Cop? system (http://www.fiber-fence.com) ensures that only authorized personnel have access to vital communications equipment and cabling that runs through underground communications corridors.

Manholes, handholes, and other access points are protected by Cover Cop sensors, which signal audible and visible alerts in the event that a utility cover is opened by unauthorized personnel. At the facility's security office, the exact location of the open cover is displayed on a monitor screen as a flashing icon that appears over a map of the underground facility.

Unlike most other security systems, Cover Cop fiber optic sensors use light (photons) instead of electricity (electrons) to signal an alert. This makes the system more secure under a variety of threat scenarios.

For example, even if the fiber optic cable that connects the sensors is cut or broken, the system would still function by alerting security personnel of the break and its exact location. An added benefit of using non-electric fiber optic technology is that Cover Cop sensors cannot spark an explosion in underground utilities where volatile gases may be present.

"It is startling to realize how much of our nation's vital communications infrastructure is accessible to anyone via unsecured entrance ways (http://www.fiber-fence.com)," according to FIS President Frank Giotto. "The U.S. Military is among the first to recognize this threat and has been proactive in seeking solutions. Hopefully, their deployment of our Cover Cop system will encourage other entities, including public utilities, to adopt similar security measures."

The Cover Cop system is a spin-off of the company's patented Fiber Fence® Perimeter Monitoring Systems, which have also been purchased by the U.S. Military to monitor above ground facilities.
