Two Way Radios, An Old Technology In A New World

Communication devices have changed a great deal since the first mobile two-way radio was used in 1923. Back then, they were known as walkie-talkies or handie-talkies. It's hard to believe that the sleek and compact cell phones we use today are based upon the technology of those bulky and awkward contraptions we played with when we were children.

Since 1907, ships at seas were able to use stationary-based two-way radio to communicate with shore. The 1920?s brought mobile use of two-way radio to a police department in Australia. But it wasn?t until 1933 that two-way radios were advanced enough in America for the authorities to start using them. Before the radio, officers would have to stop at telephone boxes and check in with the police station. No wonder the 20?s were roaring, all the police officers were on the phone.

While the majority of us use cell phones for our day-to-day communicating, there are still many people who use two-way radios for their jobs or other reasons. Police departments still use them, though the radios of today are more advanced and more reliable than in the early days. Ranchers and farmers use two-way radio because in many places you just can?t guarantee that you?re going to receive a cellular signal when you need one. Over the road truck drivers use CB radios to communicate with each other and with their base of operations, CB radios are a type of two-way radio. Enthusiasts of outdoor recreation such as hiking and mountain climbing also use walkie-talkies to reach other members of the excursion, or if they need help or medical assistance. Soldiers in all branches of the armed services are trained in the use of two-way radio, and even our troops over-seas are using walkie-talkies to keep in contact with each other on the battlefields.

Companies that specialize in communication tools such as Motorola, Verizon, Kenwood, and other popular and well-known names in the industry are continuously improving and enhancing the technology that changed a simple walkie-talkie into a tiny telephone with the ability to take pictures, play music, and even access the internet.

Cell phone are able to perform many new and incredible functions every day, but if the battery goes dead or a storm interrupts your signal, none of those features are going to work at all. There are numerous occasions when a two -way radio is a better choice than a cell phone and many businesses and professions that implement its use. Cell phones look awesome and work exceptionally well in most situations but in some cases they are simply not reliable enough.

Walkie-talkies have long been a favorite children's toy as well. Many parents may not connect the sight of their child talking on a cell phone with a two-way radio, but they are likely to remember sleepovers and camping trips when hiding under the covers with a flashlight and giggling with a friend via a walkie-talkie was the highlight of the night.

Two way radios are an important part of the communication infrastructure of our world, and they will likely continue to be so.
