Leica Geosystems ScanStation Defines Cutting-edge Forensic Technology on A&E Real-Life Series, CRIME 360

Norcross, Ga. (PRWEB) April 4, 2008 -- The latest episode of A&E?s Real-Life series, CRIME 360, ?Final Call? which aired March 27, 2008, once again offered detectives and forensic investigators a unique method of investigating a murder with the help of the Leica Geosystems ScanStation 2 (http://www.leica-geosystems.com/us/forensic), a state-of-the-art forensic 3D laser scanner.

At the Scene

The story begins when homicide detectives are called to a bloody crime scene in a residential neighborhood. A man?s body, riddled with bullets, is found on a porch while the home?s tenant is allegedly asleep inside. Forensic investigators immediately deploy the Leica 3D laser scanning system to permanently record the scene in 3D which includes the body, blood spatter, the victim's cell phone and a broken vase.

Forensic technicians initially scan the scene where the body was found, but as new evidence is uncovered they determine that a store across the street played a role in events so they return to the scene during the daytime for additional outdoor scanning.

Virtual Revisits

?Veteran homicide detectives know that during the first few hours of an investigation their understanding of what will be important to measure at a crime scene beyond the obvious is very limited. Interviews need to be conducted and all of the evidence evaluated before solid theories can be developed. The ability of the Leica ScanStation to measure and record all of the visible physical evidence at the scene so that investigators can return to the controlled crime scene again and again in a 3D virtual environment is a huge leap forward in forensics,? says Tony Grissim, Forensic Account Manager for Leica Geosystems. ?Through this show and our forensic web site at http://www.leica-geosystems.com/us/forensic, we?re introducing law enforcement officials across the country to the benefit of Leica?s scanning technology.
